MIKE DODD
Mike lives and works in southern France. Following a career in illustration in the UK, he is exploring the creative potential of freedom from the constraints of producing commercial art. He gained an MA in Fine Art from UWIC in Cardiff in 2008.
In the summer of 2009, he made an epic raft trip down the Mississippi River, from Stillwater, Minnesota to Memphis, Tennessee, a journey of more than 1000 miles. In the course of this journey, he created a series of 'spirals' out of found materials on the sandbars where he camped at night. These pieces were both ephemeral and site-specific - the images shown below are a record of this work. He has continued to explore the spiral as an archetypal form in further pieces created in France and the UK.
The 'Reflections' paintings were executed for a joint exhibition in France with his son, photographer Jack Williams Dodd. Mike painted these two pieces from photographs taken by Jack in Béziers and Bristol at sunset.
