Congratulations to Gerald Piggott, our logo design competition winner!

Gerald's winning design will be added to the website very soon as the name change takes place from Bute Space to Oriel Ty Coch. Many thanks to all those who entered the competition. There were some great entries and it was a really tough call to make!

Logo Design Competition

BUTE SPACE (Soon to become ORIEL TY COCH) are looking for talented artists and designers to design the gallery's new logo. The winning design will be used for the gallery signage, packaging, website, stationary and all marketing material. The winner will be credited on the website and the gallery is also hoping for publicity surrounding the competition and the winning design/designer.

Key points to consider

• The new gallery name "ORIEL TY COCH" must be present in your design. The English translation "RED HOUSE GALLERY" must also be present. Ideally, the Welsh name should be more prominent than the English, given the location.

• The new gallery is housed in a red brick building which was originally built as a coach house. The gallery has a traditional barn feel with exposed high beams.

• The interior will be refurbished in a contemporary style, including a polished concrete floor and white walls throughout. The lighting will be of a very high spec, and a large and contemporary chandelier will hang in the centre of the high ceiling as an eye-catching and elegant centrepiece.

• The logo should be contemporary and eye-catching against the red brick exterior of the building. Ideally the logo will reflect the exciting contrast of a contemporary gallery within a traditional building. However, this is not a requirement.

Details and terms of entry

• Each participant may enter as many different designs as they wish.

• Electronic documents are preferable, but your design can also be hand-painted. To submit your design electronically, please email as a JPEG format to: logo@butespace.com

• Please include a brief explanation to your design if you feel this is necessary, as well as your name and contact details.

• The design should be your own work. Plagiarism is forbidden by all means.

• ORIEL TY COCH reserves the right to revise and use your design. Participating in the contest indicates that you have read and accepted these terms.

• Your design/s will be evaluated in the following two weeks after the deadline for submission on December 10th, and the winning design will be announced by the end of December 2009

• Please contact logo@butespace.com with any questions you may have! Good luck!

Bute Space will soon be changing its name...

Initially it was decided that the gallery would keep its original name and many of you supported this decision. However, over the past few months, a few concerns have arisen that keeping the name may cause considerable confusion with regards to the new location. Obviously, this is something that we can't ignore, and so after even more deliberation, I would like to announce that the new name for the gallery will be....

'Oriel Ty Coch'

The logo will also incorporate its English translation 'Red House Gallery'.

Why Oriel Ty Coch / Red House Gallery?

Locally, the new premises is referred to as 'The Red Barn', 'The Red Brick Building', 'The Coach House' etc. It seemed to make sense to combine these to come up with a similarly familiar name, which hopefully will allow the gallery to be easily found within Pontcanna. We also feel that it would benefit the gallery by having a Welsh name.

What will change?

Changes to the website, email addresses etc will take place during December/January 2009 so that we are ready to re-launch in February as planned. Please continue to visit the website at www.butespace.com and email us at our usual email addresses (visit contact page) and when these changes take place we will let you know. There will be a re-direction on our website address so that we don't lose any existing visitors.

Logo design competition

We would like you to be involved in the design of the gallery's new logo. We have tried our hands at a design, but we think you can do better! The deadline for entries is 10th December and the winning design will be used for the gallery signage, packaging, website, stationary and all marketing material. The winner will be credited on our website and we are also hoping for some publicity surrounding the competition and the winning design. Further details of how to enter will be posted onto the website and our Facebook and Twitter pages by the weekend. In the mean time, get sketching....!

Bute Space's new home will be...(drum roll)...

...The Red Barn, 2A Pontcanna Street and will be launching this coming February. The building, which was originally built as a coach house is surrounded by a number of stylish and very popular cafes and restaurants, florists and clothing boutiques. We are very excited about the move and the locals have so far welcomed the news of an art gallery with excitement and anticipation!

We are moving!
We are currently in the process of re-locating from our first home in Bute Street, Cardiff Bay to an exciting new venue in Pontcanna, Cardiff. Further details of the new gallery and location will be announced here soon so please do keep a close eye on our website for updates. We appreciate your patience during this busy time and please don't hesitate to contact us with any enquiries by emailing us at info@butespace.com or by using the contact form on this site.  Second Wave awash with diverse talent

Written by DAVID TRIGG for Metro Newspaper - Monday, September 1, 2008

Second Wave

A seascape by Vernon Jones from 'Second Wave'

For its second exhibition showcasing works by emerging and established artists, Bute Space Gallery has once again packed its three floors to bursting with an impressive array of paintings, illustrations, sculptures and ceramics.

Visitors are greeted by Vernon Jones' breathtaking seascape painting, which is so enormous it takes up an entire wall of the downstairs gallery. Jones' rendering of crashing ocean waves is truly remarkable and you'd be hard pressed to find another artist whose seascapes are as good as this. In contrast, Nathan Howell's paintings of Cardiff Bay capture the calm waters just a stone's throw from the gallery.

His peaceful scene, Winter Sunset, is extremely well observed, beautifully capturing the cold evening light. Upstairs, Barbie McClure's curious little assemblages made from found materials resemble boats and wagons. Appearing extremely weathered, these Lilliputian vehicles are full of character and charm. Meanwhile, a whole room is dedicated to the illustration work of former boxer turned artist, Patrick Killian.

The centrepiece here is a large painting of the 2005 Six Nations rugby champions, featuring signatures from each player; there are also several portraits of boxers including Enzo Maccarinelli and Joe Calzaghe. Although Killian's work is slightly out of step with the rest of the show, it neatly highlights the gallery's pluralistic game plan.

Until Sep 13th, Bute Space Gallery & Studios, 123 Bute Street, Cardiff Bay. Tue to Sat 11am to 6pm; Sun 11am to 4pm. Tel: 029 2048 2565. www.butespace.com

A New Wave of art in Cardiff

new wave

A piece by Ruth Piper from New Wave

Cardiff Bay's newest gallery has got off to a convincing start with its first exhibition. Featuring work by 50 artists, New Wave is a mixture of paintings, photographs, ceramics and sculptures.

Downstairs, Ruth Mclees bold paintings reveal a love of patterns. She works directly on to furnishing fabric and other printed material, taking her imagery from the world of glossy fashion. Patty Kraus, who also works as a TV producer, has several striking photographs included here. Her arresting images are the result of recent international travel, filming the TV series Around The World In 80 Gardens. A particular highlight is her shot of Nevada's Glen Canyon, USA.

Ruth Piper's colourful pop art canvases have been removed from their supports and reconfigured; now appearing like cushions or deflated balloons, these paintings have a quirky charm. Upstairs there are some stunning pieces from an artist called Lye. His super-slick opaque glass bowls are outstanding. Although they look mass-produced, each one is hand-finished and no two are identical.

New Wave is an impressive and promising start for Bute Space Gallery. Its aim is to show work by established artists as well as introduce new talent and, based on the strength of this inaugural show, it looks set to quickly establish itself as one to watch.

Until Aug 7, Bute Space Gallery And Studios, 123 Bute Street, Cardiff Bay, Tue to Sat 10am to 6pm, Sun 11am to 4pm, free.
